Cottage 11 Restoration Projectchildren remember documentary
A New Step to Preserving the Past

The building that was once Cottage 11 has been totally cleaned out, walls removed that had been added, floors sanded, and three new furnaces and air-conditioning units installed in a large effort to preserve this original building and open to the public for touring. We are presently waiting for our architect’s blueprints so we understand any standards we need to abide by. And we continue to gather artifacts for furnishing the building. We are specifically searching for 1930s furniture, wool braided rugs in good condition, single-sized metal beds, rug beaters, and old scrub brushes. Also, 1930s boys’ clothing (including knickers and high-top shoes), old white uniforms worn by the matrons, and 1930s women’s clothing that Assistant Matrons might have worn.

If you have anything you feel might be appropriate, please write:

State School Orphanage Museum, 540 West Hills Circle, Owatonna, MN 55060
or phone Board member Sandy Dinse at 507-451-7646.

We hope we can give a better idea of when the restoration might be completed in the near future.

Funding

In our last newsletter, we wrote of the possible opportunity for individuals to "fund a room" to help with the expense of the displays inside C-11. We would like to thank those who showed an interest. We met as a Board and have agreed on an alternate idea. In Cottage 11, we will be displaying an “APPLE GIVING TREE” on a wall inside the building. Names of donors will be engraved on colored apples and displayed on the tree. Colors and size of apples will be determined as follows.

Cottage 11 Project, Donation Level... Color of Apple

$1,000 or more........ Red
$500 - 999.............. Gold
$250 - 499.............. Green
$100 - 249.............. Silver

Names of donors giving less than $100 will be listed in a framed wall hanging.

The idea of the "Apple Giving Tree" 'stems' from the large apple orchard behind Cottage 11 on the State School grounds—a positive reflection of State School history.

Donations are always accepted and appreciated.

Your donations, whether specified or not, continue to allow us to tell the story of the orphanage, and are greatly appreciated.
